COTTAGE DESCRIPTION
This river property is not for everyone but if you like the great outdoors
in all it's natural glory and wish to live a part of Canadian history, guaranteed,
you will love this cottage and the seven acres of paradise.
This outstanding property is owned by the world famous
Canadian artist Robert Bateman and is a place where he goes occasionally
to get away from it all and a place which has inspired many of his paintings.
Many of his paintings were created in this very cottage on the Buckslide River
in the beautiful Haliburton Highlands.
This magnificent log cottage starts with a good size living room with a couple of sofas and a couple of chairs as well as a table and chairs for afternoon tea. The feature of the living room is an incredible stone fireplace which is the most unique and truly functional design that I have ever seen.
This is truly a country kitchen with some modern touches such as a full size refrigerator, a microwave, coffee maker and toaster oven. In addition there is a wood burning stove if the spirit moves you to experience what cooking was like before electric and gas stoves. To augment the wood burning
stove, there is a modern convection oven and 3 hot plates which will serve you well regardless
of how many people you are cooking for. There is no dishwasher or washer or dryer
here so bring what you need to complete your chores.
Perhaps the most outstanding room in the cottage is the solarium with ceiling to floor
and ceiling windows which doubles as a dining area with seating for 10 at a huge harvest table.
This room overlooks the Buckslide River as it meanders past the front of the cottage.
There are four sleeping areas within the cottage including a good size master bedroom with queen size bed, a second bedroom with a double size bed and a 3rd bedroom with 2 single beds for your
sleeping comfort. The forth sleeping area is actually the loft above the living room where the
are two more single beds and a set of single bunks. This loft circles the living room below
and it is the opposite side of this loft is where Mr. Bateman had his art studio
which overlooks the river below.
Outside:
To emphasize a point made earlier, this cottage is not for every family, especially families with very young children. Please understand that this property is primarily an island surrounded by the Boshkung River which splits in two to form the island. A very short bridge permits access to the island for family and vehicle. This river moves at different speeds on the property from a very quiet passage in front of the cottage to fast moving rapids on the other side of the property and through a shoot to a quieter section below. I am sure that a young child would be fascinated but it is the family with 10 year olds through their teen years who would really appreciate the diversity of this river and who would respect the property and visual delights as if it was their own. There are a number of trails which criss-cross the property and there is certainly a spot which each and everyone will call their own, a place to go and contemplate life and the challenges of the future. This property is a class room where nature and civilization coexist and where people will grow to fully understand the complex balance of nature and human progress. This vacation could be an important opportunity for a family to open a discussion of where we fit in the cosmic order of things or a place to simple vegetate beside a mountain stream.
